MOREHEAD, Ky – Belmont softball dropped a hard-fought battle to Morehead State Sunday afternoon as the Eagles edged the Bruins, 1-0.
After two and half scoreless innings, MSU scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the third off a two-out RBI single to center field.
Belmont's best chance of lighting up the scoreboard came in the top of the fourth inning as the Bruins loaded the bases off singles from Amy Zeronian (Pasadena, Calif.) and Jessica Wilson (Alvin, Texas) and a walk from Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.).
The hosts escaped the jam, however, as a groundout ended the inning and the Bruins stranded three runners.
Still down just a single run entering the seventh inning, Ally Bessette (Bryan, Texas) recorded her first triple of her career. The rookie was eventually called out trying to steal home as the Bruins
On the day, Belmont recorded five hits. Amy Zeronian led the offensive attack, finishing two-for-three at the plate. In total, the Bruins left six runners on base.
BU's Carolyn Snodgress (Torrance, Calif.) had a solid outting from the circle but the junior was credited with the loss. In six innings of work, the right-hander allowed just one earned run and struck out three MSU batters.
Zeronian led the Bruins all weekend as the sophomore outfielder posted a .444 average; recording four hits on nine at-bats with an RBI over the three-game series.
Belmont returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, as the Bruins are set to travel to nearby Murfreesboro for a mid-week tilt with Middle Tennessee. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
