OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. – The Belmont women's golf team stands in fourth place after round one of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Women's Golf Championship held Monday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama.
On a windy, cool day played on a wet Highlands Course, the Bruins posted a team score of 306 to finish the round one alone in fourth place. They are five shots behind first round leader Jacksonville State, who shot a 301. Eastern Kentucky is in second at 302, while Tennessee Tech stands in third place at 304. Murray State is six strokes behind BU in fifth place at 312.
Freshman Mallory Sullivan leads Belmont after day one. The Smithville, Tennessee native shot a one under par 71 on Monday to finish the round alone in second place. She is one shot behind individual leader Whitney Robertson of Tennessee Tech (70) and two shots ahead of third place Melana Bajo Geijo of Jacksonville State (73).
Sullivan's 71 was the lowest first round score shot by a Belmont golfer at a conference tournament, eclipsing the previous mark of 74 set by Lorie Warren in 2009 and Janet Steen in 2013.
Two other Bruins are among the top-20 after round one. Senior Evin Edens and sophomore Megan Heath are both tied for 17th after each shot a six over par 78.
Sophomore Katie Story is tied for 25th place after posting a day one score of 79, while senior Sydney Hudson is tied for 31st after carding a 81.
The second round of the championship will begin Tuesday morning at 8:00am. The Bruins will tee off from 9:40-10:20am.
