OXFORD, Miss. -- The Belmont Softball team (3-15) was unable to get their bats going against host-Ole Miss (19-3) on the final day of the Red & Blue Classic. The Bruins fell, 8-0, to the Rebels in five innings.
After three quiet innings, Belmont was able to come up with its first hit of the day in the top of the fourth, courtesy of freshman Baylee Cook (Lewisburg, Tenn.) with a single up the middle. Unfortunately, the team fell shy in converting the opportunity.
BU had one more chance in the top of the following inning when senior Jordan Daly (Humble, Texas) smashed a hard single to the pitcher but the Rebels used a squeeze play to get her out at second base when sophomore Jess Andree (Darien, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice.
Cook and Daly both went 1-for-2 in the effort.
Senior Shelby Willard (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and redshirt sophomore Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) split time in the circle for the Bruins, combining for three strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action on Tuesday, taking on in-state rival Tennessee at the Mid-State Classic in Columbia, Tenn. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
