MURRAY, Ky. – Belmont Softball was unable to string together an offensive effort to combat deteriorating conditions in steady rain and chilly bats Sunday afternoon on the road. The Bruins (29-15, 5-8 OVC) fell at Murray State (31-15, 7-5 OVC), 8-0, at Racer Field. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain.
The Racers made a mark on the scoreboard first with a two RBI home run in the bottom of the first frame. Murray State went on to add a run in each of their halves of second, third and fourth innings, capitalizing on some unfortunate Bruin errors to go up, 5-0, by the fifth inning. A stepped up defensive effort, with great plays by junior Jess Andree (Darien, Ill.) and senior Kate Black (Knoxville, Tenn.), finally saw BU keep the Racers off the board in the bottom of the fifth frame. However, the damage was done.
The Bruins made contact with the ball throughout the entire contest but were unable to get a runner on base.
Inside the circle, a trio of Bruins saw action, led by junior Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.), who tossed 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action on Monday, April 24 with a conference doubleheader at in-state rival Austin Peay. First pitch is set for set for 3 p.m. Live stats will be available.
