NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Another undefeated weekend of tournament play saw the Belmont Softball team take its second tournament title of the non-conference season. The Bruins (19-4) extended its shutout streak on Sunday at E.S. Rose Park to win the Belmont/TSU Invitational. BU held off St. Bonaventure (5-12), 6-0, to extend its win streak to six games and its shutout streak to four consecutive.
Belmont posted its first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning behind a single to left by sophomore Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) that plated junior Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas). In the bottom of the next frame, the Bruins posted three runs and never looked back. Baker smashed her first triple of the season to send juniors Chelsea Thomas (Hot Springs, Ark.) and Cam Strother (Chesapeake, Va.) over the plate before she was sent home after a deep single by freshman Cheyenne Cavanaugh (Spring, Texas).
Extra insurance runs were posted by senior Jess Andree (Darien, Ill.) with solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the 6-0 victory.
Inside the circle, sophomore Brooklin Lee (Burns, Tenn.) went the distance, logging seven strikeouts as she improved to 10-1 on the season.
BU returns to action on Wednesday at E.S. Rose Park, hosting in-state rival Middle Tennessee State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. The game will have live stats available and can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network.
