Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University Softball secured a sweep over Morehead State with their third consecutive win over the weekend, 8-4, Sunday from E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins have now successfully swept four teams in the Ohio Valley Conference including Austin Peay, SIUE, and Tennessee Tech.
With the victory, the Bruins improved to 16-4 in league play and are tied for first place in the OVC with Murray State.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles got on the board in the top of the second courtesy a two-out, two RBI triple from Trinity Spear.
Belmont quickly responded with two runs of their own. Abi Ledbetter reached based before Emily Cockrill came up clutch and sent a home run soaring through the Nashville sky for a two RBI home run. The two-run blast was the freshman third baseman's first career home run.
A single, double and two walks led the Eagles to add a run to their total in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, the Bruins excelled at the plate to take command. Elison Ollinger got the Bruins started with a ripped double sent perfectly down the right field line, her seventh of the season.
Ollinger and Cockrill scored as Kaley Varner reached base on a Morehead State error.
Ledbetter and Ollinger each got on base to start the Bruins' fifth. Cockrill added another run-scoring hit before Audrey Lyle laced a two RBI double.
Baie Ensio and Emma Barnes had fantastic diving catches in the outfield to maintain the lead.
Cavanaugh solidified the Bruins' scoring on the day with a solo home run, her second on the weekend, and fourth of the season.
Alex Clesi, Delayna Bryant and Emma Summers all saw action in the circle Sunday. After a thrilling perfect game and a stellar relief appearance Saturday, Summers earned her 11th victory of the season.
