Women's Tennis Takes Two Singles Points in 5-2 Setback to Austin Peay Friday

Bruins Win No. 1 and No. 4 Singles, Claim No. 3 Doubles in First Road Test of 2023

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Despite faltering in its first road outing of the season, the Belmont University women's tennis team picked up a trio of match wins Friday afternoon against Austin Peay in Evansville, Indiana. The Bruins (1-1) won No. 1 and No. 4 singles, in addition to No. 3 doubles, in a 5-2 non-conference loss to the Governors (2-1).

The indoor hosts earned the doubles point following 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Austin Peay's Jana Leder and Melody Hefti topped freshman Mariia Hlahola and sophomore Abi Solomon at the top doubles spot, while the Governors' Denise Torrealba and Yu-Hua Cheng bested sophomore Viktoria Kliimand and senior Taylor Trondson.

Sophomore Anastasiya Zholdakova and graduate student Meredith Roberts pulled out a 7-5 win over Austin Peay's Sophia Baranov and Lucy Lascheck at the third doubles spot for Belmont's first match victory of the day.

In singles action, Hlahola improved to 2-0 on the young season with a three-set triumph against Torrealba. Taking the opening set 6-2, Hlahola recovered from a 7-5 second set loss by winning the third in convincing fashion, 6-1.

Likewise, Kliimand moved to 2-0 in singles play with a double bagel victory over Cheng at the No. 4 position.

Three of the Bruins' four singles losses went to three sets. Both Solomon and Trondson won their first sets 6-3 at No. 2 and No. 6 singles as Roberts evened up her match at No. 5 singles with a 6-4 second set win.
