Softball Splits Day Two at the Mercer Bear Invitational

Belmont Improves their Record to 9-2 on the Season

MACON, Ga. -- Belmont Softball splits the second day at the Mercer Bear Invitational with a win over the host team Mercer University, 5-1 and a 2-0 loss against Jacksonville University.

Belmont's pitching shined today as both pitchers posted double digit strikeouts. Maya Johnson finished the first game against Jacksonville with 10 strikeouts. Emma Summers picked up her first win of the season with 12 strikeouts.

Baie Ensio had a fantastic day to 2 RBI and 3 hits against Mercer.

How it Happened- Game One

The Bruins fell short in their at bats against the Dolphins in game one of the day.

Emily Cockrill is gaining confidence at the plate as she was one of two Bruins to earn a hit against Jacksonville with a single in the second inning.

Kristen Green attempted to rally the Bruins with a single in the seventh but was left on base to conclude the game.

Belmont remained defensively sound all game. Jacksonville University posted 2 home runs in the second and fourth innings as the difference makers in today's game.

How it Happened- Game Two

Belmont defeated Mercer at their home field to earn their ninth win of the season.

Bases loaded in the second courtesy of Kailey Brown, Cockrill, and Kaley Varner. Abi Ledbetter reached on a fielder's choice at home to keep the bases loaded. Baie Ensio capitalized with a single to score Cockrill, 1-0.

The slapper, Ensio, came in clutch again in the fourth to move Ledbetter who took first on a throwing error. Emma Barnes blasted a double up the middle to score Ensio and Ledbetter. Barnes' speed brought her home on a pass ball, 4-0.

Mercer loaded the bases in an attempt to come back in the fifth. Belmont allowed a single run but Summers closed out the inning with a strikeout leaving 3 on base.

Ensio back up again for the Bruins in fifth with an RBI single to score Cockrill for the final scoring play at the day.

A full team effort to take the win over Mercer, 5-1.

Up Next- Belmont will face the University of South Carolina for their final venture at the Mercer Bear Invitational.
