KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--Â Belmont University Softball posted two shutout wins against the Mountaineers of Appalachian State 5-0, and the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State 1-0.Â
Belmont's pitching recorded impressive numbers in the circle. Both Maya Johnson and Emma Summers pitched complete shutout games for the Bruins. Johnson tallied 14 strikeouts for her career high. Each allowed only three hits from the opposing offenses.Â
How it Happened Game 1
Belmont quickly earned a run in the first matchup against Appalachian State on a double steal play to score Baie Ensio.Â
The Bruins continued on their success in the second with 2 in scoring position. Emily Cockrill sent out a single down the 3rd base line to score Turner who reached on a walk.
Top of the third Kailey Brown advanced the Bruins lead over the Mountaineers on a 2 RBI double. To wrap up the scoring in the Daria Haynie sent out a single for her second hit of the day to bring in Brown.Â
Belmont held the 5-0 score for the remaining 4 innings. Summers closed out the game with a final strikeout to secure the win.Â
How it Happened Game 2Â
Belmont faced a competitive defensive battle in the second game of the day against Jacksonville State.Â
Maya Johnson faced 27 batters and struck out 14 for her career high.Â
Abi Ledbetter posted the game winning single in the fifth to score Kaley Varner who walked to start the inning.Â
Belmont will close out the Tennessee Classic with rematches against Appalachian State at 1:30 p.m. and Tennessee at 4 p.m.Â
