EVANSVILLE, Ind.-- Belmont University Softball fell 3-2 in a hard fought 11 inning battle against the Evansville Purple Aces.Ā
Pitcher
Maya Johnson posted a program record of 22 strikeouts against the Purple Aces in her nine innings pitched. Johnson's strikeouts made up 22 of the 32 outs for the Bruins. At 22 Johnson holds the most strikeouts in a single game this season in Division I.Ā
How it Happened
The Bruins went up first on the day with an RBI triple from
Kailey Brown to bring home
Kathryn Flowers who singled in the second.Ā
Belmont continued their lead in the third by loading the bases on singles from
Emily Cockrill and
Kristen Green and a walk from
Abi Ledbetter. A fielder's choice took Cockrill out of the mix but with Spurlin pinch running at third she was able to steal home on a wild pitch to extend the lead.Ā
The Purple Aces reached on an error to start the fifth inning. A double from Nink put two in scoring position. Another double from Wood brought in both runners to tie the game.Ā
Belmont battled fiercely in the remaining six innings of the defensive matchup. Top of the tenth the Bruins made strides to win with a double from Ledbetter and a single from Blume. The Bruins were unable to bring them home.Ā
After two walks to begin the 11th the Purple Aces posted a walk-off single to secure the victory.Ā
Up Next: The Bruins will face Evansville in a double header Sunday, April 2 in a double header.
