Women's Tennis Sweeps Northern Iowa 7-0 in Nashville Friday

Bruins Win Fourth Straight, Remain Unblemished in the Valley

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Winning its fourth consecutive match, the Belmont University women's tennis team picked up a key victory on Good Friday with a 7-0 sweep of Northern Iowa at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex in the Music City. Remaining perfect in Missouri Valley Conference play, the Bruins moved to 4-0 and 7-10 overall by taking the all-important doubles point and securing straight-set wins in all six singles matches.

It took Belmont only two hours to claim its second sweep in the Valley, earning doubles victories at the top two spots to take a 1-0 lead before showcasing its depth with strong performances throughout the singles lineup.

The nationally-ranked Ukrainian duo of freshman Mariia Hlahola and sophomore Anastasiya Zholdakova and the sophomore tandem of Viktoria Kliimand and Abi Solomon both collected 6-3 triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Kliimand and Solomon topped the Panthers' Darta Dalecka and Lorena Cardoso at the second spot before Hlahola and Zholdakova defeated Andrijana Brkic and Kim Zizek on court one.

Northern Iowa's lone bright spot of the day came at third doubles where the Panthers' Thaissa Moreira and Issa Sullivan got past senior Taylor Trondson and graduate student Meredith Roberts.

Northern Iowa (5-13-1, 1-5 MVC) had no answer in singles action.

Roberts quickly dismissed Moreira 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth flight and Hlahola dispatched Brkic 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot. Zholdakova then clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Cardoso. Finishing right behind Zholdakova was Kliimand, who bested Zizek 6-3, 6-0 on court four.

At the sixth position, Trondson gave up only two games to the Panthers' Kanyanut Sudsaard in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 affair. Solomon closed out the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dalecka at the second spot.
