Bruins Top Coyotes

Belmont Finishes the Weekend with Win Over South Dakota

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Belmont University Softball Program (4-4) rounded out the weekend with a rematch against South Dakota (4-6). The Bruins topped the Coyotes in a tight 1-0 game. With the win over South Dakota, Belmont finished the weekend 3-2 at the Panther Invitational. 
 
Both teams came out strong defensively. Emma Summers threw back-to-back strikeouts to open the game for Belmont. The Coyotes recorded two hits over the next two innings but were unable to bring in a run. 
 
Belmont struggled to get their offense going. The Bruins were three up, three down in the first, second, and third inning. Nicole Hughes recorded a single in the fourth to finally get the Belmont bats moving. The Bruins got two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth but were unable to bring them home. 
 
The Bruins and Coyotes remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth. Hughes stepped up again and added a double to get Belmont going. The shortstop would later reach home on a wild pitch to put the Bruins on the board. Belmont held a 1-0 lead heading into the final inning.
 
South Dakota threatened the Belmont lead with a double in the seventh. Summers continued to throw a consistent game and recorded two strikeouts to help close out the game for the Bruins. Belmont finished the game and weekend on top 1-0. 
 
What's Bruin

  • Emma Summers pitched a complete game in win versus South Dakota. The pitcher recorded eight strikeouts and only allowed four hits with no runs for a .66 ERA. Summers moves to 1-1 this season.
  • Indy Cockrill led the Bruins with a .417 batting average this weekend. The junior added five hits, five runs, one double, and two home runs on 12 at bats. 
  • Nicole Hughes had another strong showing for the Bruins. The shortstop posted a .412 batting average on seven hits, four runs, two doubles, two home runs, and 3 RBIs. Hughes also recorded 15 putouts and six assists. 

Up Next
The Bruins will travel to Jacksonville, Ala. to compete in the Cocky Classic hosted by Jacksonville State. Belmont will take on Southern Mississippi, Southern Indiana, Samford, and JSU in tournament play.
