Softball Downs Jacksonville State to Complete Undefeated Weekend

Bruins Finish the Cocky Classic 4-0

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Belmont University Softball Program (8-4) clashed with host Jacksonville State (5-11) to round out the Cocky Classic on Sunday. The Bruins were dominant from first pitch to claim an 8-3 win over the Gamecocks. With the win versus JSU, Belmont finished the weekend undefeated.

How it Happened
Belmont was hot from the start. With the first at bat of the game, Baie Ensio doubled to right center. Emma Barnes followed with an RBI single to bring Ensio home and put the Bruins on the board. Nicole Hughes was up next in the batter's box and quickly recorded a double to put runners on second and third. Grace Gressly followed Hughes with an RBI single of her own. Belmont pinch ran Savannah Halterman for Gressly. Halterman did what she does best, and recorded her fourth stolen base of the season as she took second. Brenna Blume later added an RBI sac fly to bring in another run for the Bruins. Halterman would eventually reach home and give Belmont a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Bruins held the Gamecocks scoreless in the bottom of the first.

In her first at bat of the game, Indy Cockrill blasted the ball past the fence for a home run. I. Cockrill's home run was the Bruins' only hit in the second inning extending their lead to 5-0.

Belmont and JSU were locked at 5-0 until the top of the fifth. Kylie Cunningham walked leaving the bases loaded with Bruins. Ensio stepped up to the plate and recorded a 3 RBI triple to drive in three runs for Belmont. The Bruins took a commanding 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

With a run rule looming, JSU was able to bring in three runs to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Belmont went three up, three down in the final two innings. Despite the run by the Gamecocks in the fifth inning, the Bruins were able to hold JSU to just three runs for the remainder of the game. Belmont would finish the game on top 8-3 to complete an undefeated weekend at the Cocky Classic.
