OXFORD, Miss. – After beginning the season 3-0 for the first time since 2006, the Belmont University women's tennis team put together quite the effort Saturday at Southeastern Conference mainstay Ole Miss. Following an upset win by sophomore
Mariia Hlahola and junior
Anastasiya Zholdakova at the top doubles spot, the Bruins claimed two points in singles play as the host Rebels prevailed 5-2 inside the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center in Oxford, Mississippi.
Â
Hlahola and junior
Abi Solomon both captured singles victories in straight sets.
Â
An extremely tight doubles point was clinched by Ole Miss at the third spot when the Rebels' Rachel Krzyzak and Reka Zadori outlasted the freshmen tandem of
Vesa Gjinaj and
Hana Sokolovic. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Hlahola and Zholdakova downed 45th-ranked Ava Hrastar and Briana Crowley 6-4. Second doubles went to Ole Miss with Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher and Ludmila Kareisová defeating junior
Viktoria Kliimand and Solomon 6-3.
Â
Solomon then provided Belmont with its most dominant singles performance of the day as she downed Leclercq-Ficher 6-3, 6-2 at the fourth position.
Â
Improving to a perfect 4-0 at No. 1 singles, reigning Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week Hlahola gritted out a first-set tiebreaker, 7-3, against Kareisová before securing the second set, 6-1.
Â
The Rebels earned straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
