NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (16-9, 2-2 MVC) clashed with Murray State (14-15, 2-2 MVC) in a midweek match up on Tuesday. The Bruins topped the Racers 7-1.
How it Happened
Belmont had some early movement on the bases in the bottom of the first.
Grace Gressly singled to right in the first at bat of the game.
Nicole Hughes later reached on a fielder's choice and went on to steal second a couple of pitches later.
Brenna Blume entered the batter's box and singled to put runners on first and third for the Bruins. Although the Bruins saw some early action, they were unable to bring a run home.
The Bruins forced the Racers to a three up, three down inning in the second.
Daria Haynie added a single in her first at bat of the game but was left stranded after three outs by Murray State.
Belmont continued their strong defensive effort with another three up, three down inning against Murray State in the third. The Bruins recorded two more hits in the bottom of the third but couldn't bring anyone across home. The game remained knotted at 0-0 heading into the fourth.
The Bruins broke things open in the bottom of the fourth.
Lauren Luciani led Belmont off in the inning with a single up the middle. Haynie followed with a double to the right putting runners in scoring position on second and third. With an error by the Racers, Luciani would reach home and give the Bruins the first run of the day. Gressly later recorded an RBI single to give Belmont another run. After a couple errors by Murray State, Belmont worked their way through the batting order and put up three more runs to take a 5-0 lead at the end of the fourth.
Murray State responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth. Belmont continued their hot streak in the batter's box with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Emma Barnes added an RBI single, and Blume recorded an RBI off a fielder's choice to contribute to the Bruins' runs.
Belmont continued to apply pressure defensively to hold Murray State to only one run the rest of the game. The Bruins went on to finish on top 7-1.
