Softball Secures Series Sweep Over Evansville

Bruins Finish an Undefeated Week of Conference Play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (19-9, 5-2 MVC) concluded their 12-game home stand this weekend in series versus Evansville (9-22, 4-4 MVC). The Bruins topped the Aces 2-1 on Sunday to secure a series sweep.

How it Happened

Alex Clesi got the start in the circle for the Bruins. Clesi recorded two quick strikeouts in the top of the first as Belmont held Evansville scoreless through one. In her first at bat of the day, Emma Barnes singled up the middle. The Bruins were unable to bring Barnes home leaving the score at 0-0.

Evansville's offense started to get going in the top of the second and threatened with runners on second and third. Clesi came up with another huge strikeout to prevent a run for the Aces. Three Bruins added singles in the bottom of the second. Brenna Blume, Abi Ledbetter, and Kylie Cunningham combined for the Belmont hits in the second. Despite the offensive momentum, the Bruins were unable to bring a run in.

The Aces took the lead in the third after a solo home run. The Bruins answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Emily Cockrill drove in an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Blume later recorded an RBI off a fielder's choice to give the Bruins a 2-1 edge at the end of the third.

Both teams got runners in scoring position but struggled to bring them home in the fourth. Evansville and Belmont each left two runners stranded.

The Bruins played clean defense as they forced the Aces to a three up, three down inning in the fifth. Blume added another single followed by a double by Ledbetter in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Belmont was unable to bring a run across home leaving the score at 2-1 at the end of five.

Both teams went three up, three down in the sixth inning.

With just a one-point lead, Ellie Giles stepped up for the Bruins in the circle to finish off the Aces in the seventh. The pitcher recorded three strikeouts for the final three outs of the game.

The Bruins took game three of the series 2-1.
