Softball Earns 22nd Win in Series Sweep Over Indiana State

Bruins Finish the Series with an Impressive 10-3 Win

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Belmont University Softball Program (22-9, 8-2 MVC) concluded their road series at Indiana State (13-18, 2-6 MVC) Sunday afternoon. The Bruins topped the Sycamores 10-3 to secure a series sweep.

How it Happened
In the first at bat of the day, Emma Barnes walked and later stole second. The Bruins were unable to bring the right fielder home to leave the first inning scoreless. Belmont then took the field and recorded three straight outs.

Abi Ledbetter singled to centerfield in the top of the second for the first hit of the day. The Bruins later saw three straight walks resulting in two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Maya Johnson had a strong second inning in the circle. The pitcher threw three strikeouts to maintain Belmont's lead.

Indiana State recorded their first hit of the day in the third. Belmont picked up their defense and secured two final outs to fend off a Sycamores run. The Bruins stayed ahead 2-0 at the end of the third inning.

Belmont started to gain momentum in the fourth. Nicole Hughes drove in a two RBI double to extend the Bruins lead to 4-0. The Bruins allowed one hit from the Sycamores but were able to put together three stops to leave ISU scoreless at the end of four.

Ledbetter led off the fifth inning with another single. Despite the early hit, Belmont was unable to bring in a run. Johnson tallied two more strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth to hold the Sycamores without a run. The pitcher wrapped up her time in the circle in the fifth inning after tallying nine total strikeouts for the game. Belmont headed into the sixth up 4-0.

The Sycamores brought in their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Bruins lead to three.

The Bruins had an explosive performance on offense in the top of the seventh. Baie Ensio led the inning off with a single. Daria Haynie followed with a single of her own. Ledbetter entered the batter's box and added an RBI single to bring in another run for the Bruins. Indy Cockrill blasted a two RBI double to send two more runs across home. With an RBI single from Grace Gressly, Belmont added another run. Emily Cockrill stepped up to the plate and drove in another two RBI double to give the Bruins a 10-1 lead.

ISU was able to add two late runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Belmont's lead and defensive pressure proved to be too much for the Sycamores. The Bruins finished on top 10-3 to complete the series sweep.
