NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (26-11, 12-4 MVC) rounded out the weekend series against Missouri State (10-27, 6-11 MVC) on Sunday. The Bruins battled to take a close 6-5 win to clinch fourth-straight series win in MVC play.
How it Happened
Belmont got off to a hot start from the first pitch.
Maya Johnson tallied three quick strikeouts to send the Bruins into the batter's box. In the first at bat of the day for Belmont,
Emma Barnes blasted a home run to right field.
Nicole Hughes followed with a triple. An RBI sacrifice fly from
Grace Gressly would send Hughes home giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
Missouri State responded with a home run of their own in the top of the second. Belmont maintained a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
The Bears threatened to tie up the game with two runners on base before the Bruins secured a third out to keep the one-point lead after three innings.
Both teams saw a three up, three down inning in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Missouri State drove in a run to tie the game at 2-2. Belmont countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hughes led off the explosive inning for the Bruins with a double to left field. Gressly then added another RBI double to reclaim the lead for Belmont.
Indy Cockrill and
Lauren Luciani each recorded an RBI to give the Bruins a 5-2 edge at the end of the fifth.
Belmont held on to the three-point lead heading into the seventh inning.
Missouri State made a late rally to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh. With extra innings on the line,
Brenna Blume got the Bruins started with a double to right.
Abi Ledbetter then recorded a walk-off single to secure a 6-5 win for Belmont.
