DES MOINES, Iowa. – The Belmont University Softball Program (30-18, 16-10 MVC) fell to Drake (22-25, 10-13 MVC) in game two of the weekend series.
How it Happened
Grace Gressly added a single in the top of the first, but the Bruins couldn't capitalize to bring in a run. Drake threatened early with two runners on base. The Belmont defense stepped up to record the final two outs and hold the Bulldogs scoreless through one.
Drake recorded the first run of the day as Belmont fell behind 0-1 at the end of the second.
Brenna Blume built off her strong offensive performance last night with an RBI single in the top of the third. The catcher's hit evened the score at one all. Despite the play from Blume, the Bulldogs went on to have an explosive third inning adding eight runs. Drake took a 1-9 lead heading into the fourth.
In an attempt to close the gap,
Lauren Luciani drove in an RBI single to make the score 2-9 at the end of the fourth.
The Bruins went on to add another run off an RBI single from
Emily Cockrill in the top of the fifth. Belmont headed into the sixth down 3-9.
Belmont gained momentum in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases off two hits from Luciani and
Nicole Hughes. The Bruins were unable to bring anyone home leaving three runners stranded.
The Bruins continued to struggle on offense resulting in a 3-9 loss as the Bulldogs evened the weekend series.
