NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Moving to 2-0 on the weekend, the Belmont University men's tennis team defeated Austin Peay 7-0 Saturday afternoon indoors at the Ensworth Tennis Center in the Music City. The Bruins (2-1) dropped only three combined games across their two finishing doubles matches against the visiting Governors (0-2), before earning wins on all six singles courts.
Â
On Sunday afternoon, Belmont will attempt to make it a perfect 3-0 weekend as the Bruins host another Atlantic Sun Conference foe in North Alabama.
Â
The doubles tandem of senior
Diego Castro and junior
Eli Mizerski blanked Austin Peay's Tom Bolton and Lucas Ranciaro 6-0 at the No. 3 spot and freshman
Esteban Ortiz and junior
Sabi Roi secured the doubles point at the top spot with a 6-2 win over the Governors' Sota Minami and Aeneas Schaub.
Â
Although the match was not finished, the duo of junior
Esunge Ndumbe and freshman
Charlie Robin led Austin Peay's Javier Tortajada and Bodi van Galen 5-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Â
In singles action, it was graduate
Niklas von Hellens who was off the court first. At the fifth spot, von Hellens made easy work of van Galen in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. Roi then gave Belmont a 3-0 lead in the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win against the Governors' Bolton at No. 2 singles.
Â
The Bruins clinched the match when Ndumbe topped Austin Peay's Minami 6-3, 6-2 on the top singles court.
Â
Third, fourth and sixth singles all went to a third set as freshman
Morgan Woodson recovered from an opening set loss on court No. 6 against the Governors' Ranciaro. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Woodson stormed back and took sets two and three in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-0.
Â
Robin, likewise, came back from a 6-3 first-set loss at No. 3 singles. Taking on Austin Peay's Schaub, Robin won 10-5 in a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set after winning set two, 6-2.
Â
At No. 4 singles, Castro closed out the day with a gritty, 10-6 super tiebreak win against the Governors' Tortajada. After Castro won the opening set, 6-3, Tortajada forced the decisive third-set breaker with a tightly-contested 7-5 second set.
