NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team won their season opener as they defeated former Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee State 5-2 in a match played Sunday at the Ensworth Tennis Center in Nashville.Â
The Bruins picked up their first point of the match as they captured two of three doubles points. At number one, seniors
Anastasiya Zholdakova and
Aly Getty beat Jovana Nikolic and Francisca Gomez Weiss 6-1. Then at three, senior
Viktoria Kliimand and sophomore
Hana Sokolovic outlasted Louise Ratiu and Warona Mdlulwa 7-6.Â
In singles, the Bruins posted wins at four positions to clinch the 5-2 win over the Tigers. At one, Zholdakova defeated Mdlulwa in three sets: 7-5, 3-6, 10-4. On court three, Sokolovic won in straight sets over Sydney Brantley 6-4, 6-0.
Junior
Libbie Hamilton was victorious at number five as she beat Victoria Cooksey 6-0, 6-2. Then at six, freshman
Sarah McElrath picked up her first career win as a Bruin as she defeated Nikolic 7-5, 6-1.
Belmont (1-0) is back on the courts in two weeks as the Bruins play at Samford on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. in Birmingham, Alabama.
