Vanderbilt Proves to Be a Tough Out for Men’s Tennis Saturday

Bruins Drop 7-0 Decision to Commodores Down the Street

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite a trio of three-set singles matches at the top of the lineup, the Belmont University men's tennis team was unable to record a point in a 7-0 loss at Southeastern Conference neighbor Vanderbilt Saturday. The Bruins (2-3) fell at second and third doubles before junior Esunge Ndumbe, junior Sabi Roi, senior Diego Castro and junior Eli Mizerski tested their opponents in singles at the Lummis Family Tennis Center in Nashville.

The Commodores (4-2) took No. 2 doubles 6-2 and No. 3 doubles 6-3, while the tandem of freshman Esteban Ortiz and sophomore Stefan Vedovelli were deadlocked at 5-5 with Vanderbilt's Nathan Cox and Michael Ross at the top doubles spot.

After the Commodores took a 3-0 lead in the match with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, Ndumbe and Roi had set leads on their opponents on courts one and two. Against the No. 100 ranked player in the country, the Commodores' Cox, Ndumbe earned a 7-5 opening set win at the top singles spot. However, Cox topped Ndumbe 6-4, 6-1 in the second and third sets. Roi cruised to a 6-1 first-set win against Vanderbilt's Ross at No. 2 singles, but was defeated 6-2, 6-2 in sets two and three.

At the sixth singles spot, Mizerski played the Commodores' Callum Markowitz in a close 6-3, 7-5 affair but was unable to win a set.

Castro recovered from a 6-1 first-set loss to Vanderbilt's Pablo Martinez-Gomez at No. 3 singles with a 7-5 second set triumph. Playing the third set out and the match going the distance, Castro came up just short in a decisive tiebreaker with Martinez-Gomez prevailing 8-6.
