ATLANTA, Ga. – The Belmont University Softball Program (2-3) faced Eastern Kentucky (3-2) in the Buzz Classic Finale Sunday afternoon.
Maya Johnson lifted the Bruins to a 4-0 win over the Colonels after throwing just the second perfect game in program history.
How it Happened
Johnson recorded two quick strikeouts in the top of the first.
Emily Cockrill took the batter's box in the bottom of the inning and sent a single to center field. The Bruins were unable to bring her home leaving the score at 0-0 heading into the second.
The Belmont bats got hot in the second inning.
Rylee Spindler led off the inning with a single to center. Sophomore
Lauren Luciani followed with a single of her own to put runners on first and second. Another single from
Grace Gressly left the bases loaded for the Bruins.
Indy Cockrill and
Nicole Hughes each added an RBI as Belmont took a 4-0 lead to end the second.
Johnson continued to deal strikes while the Bruin defense backed her to force the Colonels to a scoreless game. The pitcher recorded 13 strikeouts in pursuit of a perfect game. Propelled by Johnson's performance, Belmont secured a win to wrap up the weekend.
