NORMAL, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (23-8, 7-1 MVC) concluded the weekend with a 3-0 win over Illinois State (7-23, 1-5 MVC) to clinch their third-straight MVC series win this season.
How it Happened
Maya Johnson got the start in the circle for the Bruins on Saturday afternoon. The pitcher caught three-straight batters swinging in the bottom of the first.
Grace Gressly got things going for Belmont in the top of the second with a home run to left.
Maddy Balsiger followed with a single through the left side. The freshman eventually reached home off a Redbird error to extend the Bruins' lead at 2-0 heading into the third.
In the top of the third,
Emma Barnes led off the inning with her second home run of the weekend to put Belmont ahead by three after as many innings.
Illinois State recorded their first hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth, but Johnson and the Bruin defense recorded three-straight outs to leave the runner stranded at third. Belmont continued to lead 3-0 heading into the fifth.
Both teams saw a one-two-three inning in the fifth.
Maya Johnson and
Lauren Luciani teamed up for an impressive double play in the bottom of the sixth to keep the Redbirds scoreless.
The Bruins went on to claim a 3-0 win over the Redbirds.
