Softball Secures Series Sweep Over Murray State

Bruins Top Racers in Just Five Innings

MURRAY, Ky. – The Belmont University Softball Program (25-10, 9-3 MVC) wrapped up their series against Murray State (11-21, 2-10 MVC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins put together a dominating 8-0 win in five innings to secure a series sweep over the Racers.

Belmont's MVC series win marks their third of the season.

How it Happened
Belmont put together an impressive defensive play in the bottom of the first as Maya Johnson struck out the batter before Brenna Blume would throw down a Racer at second to prevent a stolen base. The Bruins' defense held the Racers scoreless through one.

The Bruins' offense started to warm up in the second. Grace Gressly walked followed by a single from Maddy Balsiger. Despite the early action, Belmont was unable to bring in a run leaving the score at zeros heading into the third.

Rylee Spindler got the bats going in the top of the third with an RBI double to left center. Nicole Hughes followed with an RBI single of her own. The infield duo gave the Bruins an early two-point edge. Belmont's offense didn't slow down. The team would add two more runs in the third off an RBI double from Gressly and a huge RBI triple by Balsiger. The Bruins headed into the fourth up 4-0.

Belmont continued to build off their offensive momentum in the fourth inning. Murray State walked two-straight batters before Spindler would record a 2 RBI triple bringing the runners home. Emily Cockrill and Gressly each recorded an RBI later in the inning to extend the Bruins lead to 8-0 heading into the fifth.

In an attempt to avoid a run-rule decision, the Racers added a single and capitalized on a Bruin error to get two runners on base. The Belmont defense stepped up to record the final out and secure an 8-0 win in just five innings.
