Men's Tennis Captures Fourth-Straight Conference Regular Season Title

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Completing its fourth-straight undefeated conference season, the Belmont University men's tennis team won its fourth consecutive conference regular season title Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Tennessee Tech. Winning their third-straight Horizon League South Division crown, the Bruins (11-10, 4-0 Horizon) extended their conference match winning streak to 23.
 
Improving to 19-0 all-time in Horizon League matches, Belmont rebounded after dropping the doubles point with wins on four of the six singles courts. Gritty, three-set triumphs at No. 4 and No. 5 singles by senior Diego Castro and sophomore Stefan Vedovelli sealed the win.
 
Five singles matches went to three sets with junior Eli Mizerski collecting the most dominant victory of the afternoon. On court six, Mizerski dismissed the Golden Eagles' Elia Lauper 6-3, 6-2 to even the team score at 1-1.
 
Although the duo of junior Sabi Roi and Vedovelli were knotted up at 5-5 with Tennessee Tech's Lucas Bitzer and Lauper at the top doubles spot, the tandem of junior Esunge Ndumbe and freshman Charlie Robin were handed a 6-4 loss at No. 2 doubles by the Golden Eagles' Alex Alvarez and Murilo Burckhardt. Tennessee Tech's Oliver Dao and Darek Kuczynski got past Castro and Mizerski, 6-2, at third doubles.
 
At the top of the singles lineup, Ndumbe outlasted Alvarez with strong second and third 6-1 sets after a 6-3 opening set loss.
 
The Golden Eagles (2-12, 1-3 Horizon) got singles wins at the second and third spots with Burckhardt topping Robin 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court two and Dao edging Roi 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 on court three.
 
Both Castro and Vedovelli overcame first-set losses as Castro downed Kuczynski 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and Vedovelli prevailed against Tennessee Tech's Ricard Garavi Yepez 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

• Belmont claims its seventh NCAA Division I era regular season conference championship.
• The Bruins have won 10 total conference championships, including regular season and conference tournament, since becoming Division I members.
• The win is Belmont's sixth straight against the Golden Eagles.

The Bruins are the No. 1 South Division seed for next weekend's Horizon League Men's Tennis Championship and will take on either No. 2 North Division seed Youngstown State or No. 3 South Division seed Southern Indiana in the semifinals next Saturday at 2 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET. The Horizon League Championship is being held on the University of Michigan's campus at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
