Softball Sweeps Evansville

Bruins Top Aces in Series Finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Belmont University Softball Program (28-10, 12-3 MVC) secured a series sweep over Evansville (16-21, 2-10 MVC) with a 10-8 win Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
Rylee Spindler continued to have an impressive week at the plate with a double to get the Bruins going in the top of the first. Belmont was unable to bring Spindler home leaving the score knotted at zeros heading into the second.

After two hits and a walk, Evansville threatened with bases loaded in the bottom of the second. Maya Johnson looked unfazed as she recorded a strikeout for the third out to hold the Aces scoreless through two. The score remained 0-0 as Belmont returned to the batter's box in the top of the third.

The Bruins loaded the bases after facing a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. The Aces' defense stepped up to prevent a Belmont run despite having runners in scoring position. Evansville would go on to add a run in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 0-1 heading into the fourth.

Maddy Balsiger led off the fourth with a single to left followed by a double from Brenna Blume. Madison Dolecki stepped up to the plate and drove in a 3 RBI home run to give the Bruins a two-point lead. The freshman's home run marks the first of her career. The Aces responded with two runs to tie it up at 3-3 after four.

Belmont went on to have another three-run inning in the fifth. The Bruins' runs came curtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly from Dolecki and an error by Evansville. Heading into the sixth, Belmont held a 6-3 lead.

The Bruins' offense continued a strong showing in the top of the sixth with four runs on six hits. Grace Gressly and Balsiger each added an RBI while Blume brought in a 2 RBI double. Evansville worked their way back in with five runs to cut Belmont's lead to 10-8 heading into the final inning.

Belmont was able to hold Evansville scoreless in the seventh to claim a 10-8 win.
