TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Belmont University Softball program (40-15) fell 5-0 to Virginia Tech (42-11) in game one of the Tuscaloosa Regional.
How it Happened
Virginia Tech took an early one-point lead after hitting a home run to right in the first.
The Hokies added another hit in the second, but
Maya Johnson and the Bruin defense stepped up to prevent another run. The pitcher caught the last batter of the second swinging as Belmont headed into the third still down 1-0.
Tech went on to add four runs in the third to lead 5-0.
Emma Barnes was the first Bruin to reach base after being walked in the top of the fourth. Despite the movement, Belmont was unable to bring in a run to remain down by five.
Barnes recorded the first hit of the day for Belmont to lead off the top of the fifth.
Maddy Balsiger was then hit by pitch and
Madison Dolecki later faced a walk to leave the bases loaded with two outs on the board. Belmont was unable to capitalize on the loaded bases leaving Tech up 5-0 heading into the sixth.
Belmont switched pitchers in the bottom of the sixth.
Ally Middleton took the circle and recorded two-straight strikeouts to prevent another Hokie run.
The Bruins were unable to add another hit or run resulting in a loss by five to open Regionals.
