EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In a neutral-site match Sunday in Evansville, Indiana, the Belmont University women's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Austin Peay. The Bruins (0-4) claimed a win at No. 2 doubles and were edged in a tiebreaker at the top doubles spot before the Governors (4-1) swept singles.
Both redshirt freshman
Savannah Webster and graduate
Cielo Tapia-Cruz pushed their opponents to third-set super tiebreakers on courts one and three in singles but were unable to close things out in the deciding 10-point breakers.
The tandem of Tapia-Cruz and freshman
Mia Jones secured a 6-4 win over Austin Peay's Pauline Bruns and Elana Thiel at second doubles. However, the Governors' Sophia Baranov and Clemence Butavand evened things out with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
At the top of the doubles lineup, Webster and sophomore
Jessica Popiol narrowly fell 7-3 in a tiebreaker to Austin Peay's Luca Bohlen and Yi-Ching Huang as the Governors took the key doubles point.
Against Baranov at the top singles spot, Webster won the opening set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 6-4, and the super tiebreaker, 10-4.
At No. 3 singles against Bohlen, Tapia-Cruz came back from a 6-4 first-set loss with a 6-3 second-set win. However, in the third-set tiebreak, Bohlen prevailed 10-6.
