Men's Tennis Tripped Up at Nationally-Ranked Tennessee Sunday

Bruins Win the Doubles Point with Victories at No. 1 and No. 2

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time this season, the Belmont University men's tennis team won the doubles point at a Southeastern Conference opponent as the Bruins (2-7) challenged nationally-ranked Tennessee late Sunday afternoon outdoors in Knoxville. Belmont secured victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles at the Volunteers' Dr. Robert L. Barksdale Tennis Stadium but couldn't pull out a win on any of the six singles courts.

Sophomore Charlie Robin and graduate Will Ecklund made quick work of the Volunteers' Ethan Muza and Boruch Skierkier at second doubles with a 6-3 triumph before senior Sabi Roi and junior Stefan Vedovelli put the Bruins up 1-0. At the top of the doubles lineup, Roi and Vedovelli defeated Tennessee's Alejandro Moreno and Dragos Cazacu 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, senior Eli Mizerski and sophomore Morgan Woodson led the Volunteers' Woodson McMillin and Shion Itsusaki 4-3 when Roi and Vedovelli clinched the doubles point.

Singles play, however, was dominated by the hosts as 66th-ranked Tennessee (7-8) gave up no more than four combined games in any match at the No. 3 through No. 6 positions.

Robin battled the Volunteers' Jose Garcia at the No. 1 singles spot but was edged by the narrowest of margins (11-9) in a third-set super tiebreaker. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, Robin won the second set, 6-4.

On court two, Vedovelli nearly came back against Tennessee's Cazacu but was unable to recover from a 6-3 first set loss, falling 7-5 in the second set.
