CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball team (23–9, 10–3) split day one of its conference series against Southern Illinois University Saturday in Carbondale. The Bruins opened with a dominant 7–0 shutout, marking their first-ever road win over the Salukis, before falling 5–1 in game two. Â

VS Southern Illinois – Game 1 (7–0) Â
Both the Bruins and Salukis remained scoreless through the first four innings. While Belmont consistently found ways to get runners on base, they was unable to capitalize early.Â

Belmont broke through in the fifth inning, beginning with an RBI double from Maddy Balsiger. Brenna Blume followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2–0.Â

The Bruins added separation in the sixth behind a big swing from Rylee Spindler, who delivered a three-RBI double to clear the bases and push the advantage to 5–0. Nicole Hughes followed with an RBI single down the left field line to plate Spindler and make it 6–0.Â

Belmont continued to apply pressure in the seventh, as Spindler added another RBI with a single through the left side to cap the scoring at 7–0.Â

The Bruins left 11 runners on base, highlighting multiple additional scoring opportunities throughout the game.Â

In the circle, Maya Johnson was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts while allowing just three hits to improve to 16–1 on the season.Â

VS Southern Illinois – Game 2 (1–5) Â
Belmont was unable to carry its momentum into game two, as the Bruins were held hitless until the third inning and struggled to generate consistent offense. Â
A scoring opportunity came in the sixth when Madison Dolecki doubled to center, followed by a single from Maddy Balsiger to put runners on the corners. Lizzie Ozim drove in Belmont's lone run on a fielder's choice, but the rally was limited as SIU maintained control. Â
Ellie Giles made her first start of the season in the circle, while Mackenzie Willis provided two innings of scoreless relief. Â
