Men's Tennis Concludes Regular Season with 4-2 Setback Against Tennessee Tech

Bruins Will Be the No. 3 South Division Seed for Next Weekend’s Horizon League Championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Closing out the regular season, the Belmont University men's tennis team was handed a 4-2 loss by visiting Tennessee Tech late Saturday afternoon indoors at Vanderbilt's Lummis Family Tennis Center. Forced to alter their home match location due to forecasted inclement weather, the Bruins (9-11, 3-3 Horizon) got off to a strong start with superb doubles play but faltered in singles action.

The Golden Eagles (14-7, 6-0 Horizon), who completed an undefeated Horizon League slate with their win, captured four singles victories, three of which were decided in third sets. In fact, five of the six singles matches went to three sets.

Belmont's top doubles duo, senior Sabi Roi and junior Stefan Vedovelli, took out Tennessee Tech's Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks 6-3 right before graduate Will Ecklund and sophomore Charlie Robin defeated the Golden Eagles' Oliver Dao and Christian Capuccini 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Third doubles went unfinished with senior Eli Mizerski and sophomore Morgan Woodson deadlocked at 4-4 with Tennessee Tech's Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz.

After the Golden Eagles evened the match 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Alvarez at the No. 2 spot, Tennessee Tech took a 2-1 lead when Munoz came back from a set down at No. 4 singles against Woodson.

However, Roi responded at the top of the singles lineup versus the Golden Eagles' Dao with an impressive 6-3 second set win after narrowly dropping the first set, 11-9, in an extended tiebreaker. In the third set, Roi was up a break when Dao had to retire due to leg cramps.

Robin played a terrific second set against Tennessee Tech's Spaks at the third position, winning 6-0 after falling 6-3 in the opening set. However, Spaks prevailed in the deciding third stanza, 6-2.

Leading 3-2, the Golden Eagles needed just one more win at either No. 5 or No. 6 singles.

Mizerski took a set lead on Tennessee Tech's Burckhardt at the fifth spot, winning the first 6-4. Despite his best efforts, Mizerski was unable to close things out in the second set and Burckhardt evened the match with a 7-5 set two win. In the third, Burckhardt cruised to a 6-0 win to clinch the match for the Golden Eagles.

Meanwhile at sixth singles, Ecklund and Tennessee Tech's Ricard Garavi Yepez were even at a set apiece. Ecklund won the opening set, 6-4, while Garavi Yepez took the second set, 6-2. Garavi Yepez had a slight lead in the third set when the decisive fourth point was secured by the visitors.

Following the match, Mizerski, Roi and Ecklund were celebrated for senior day back on campus at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex.
