Men's Tennis Falters at Tennessee Tech Friday Afternoon

Bruins Secure Wins at No. 1 and No. 4 Singles in 5-2 Road Loss

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Despite a pair of singles victories, the Belmont University men's tennis team fell 5-2 at Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon in Horizon League road action. Senior Sabi Roi and graduate Will Ecklund highlighted the Bruins' play at the Tech Tennis Courts in Cookeville, Tennessee, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
 
The host Golden Eagles (10-7, 3-0 Horizon) claimed the key doubles point with a 7-5 win at second doubles as Christian Cappuccini and Oliver Dao got past Ecklund and sophomore Charlie Robin.
 
Tennessee Tech was also victorious at the top of the doubles lineup, where Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks defeated sophomore Esteban Ortiz and Roi 6-2. Senior Eli Mizerski and sophomore Morgan Woodson were knotted at 6-6 with the Golden Eagles' Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz at No. 3 doubles when Tennessee Tech clinched the first point.
 
In singles action, Roi defeated Dao 6-4, 7-5 at the top of the lineup.
 
Ecklund was also a straight-set winner at the fourth singles spot, besting Munoz 6-4, 7-6. In the second-set tiebreaker, Ecklund outlasted Munoz 9-7.
 
Mizerski pushed Burckhardt to a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 5 singles, but was ultimately edged 10-8 in the breaker in lieu of a full third set. After Mizerski took the opening set, 6-2, Burckhardt won set two with a 7-4 tiebreaker.
 
Belmont (7-10, 1-2 Horizon) was outdone in straight sets on courts two, three and six.

The Bruins continue Horizon League road action Saturday afternoon, taking on Southern Indiana for the second time this season. First serve from the USI Tennis Courts in Evansville, Indiana, is set for 2 p.m. Belmont defeated the Screaming Eagles 5-2 last Thursday in Nashville.
