Box Score 2 Edwardsville, Ill. – The Belmont men's soccer team (4-4-0) lost for the first time since September 9th, dropping a road contest to SIU Edwardsville (4-2-2) by a score of 2-0 on Thursday night.
The Cougars got out in front early when Jack Twellman connected with Aaron Lantz on a give and go that gave Lantz his first goal of the season. SIU Edwardsville took the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of play and never looked back.
Belmont was only able to tally one shot in the first period, while SIU Edwardsville recorded nine shots and five corner kicks. The Bruins picked things up in the second frame, outshooting the Cougars six to five and recorded an equal amount of corners.
It wasn't enough to take an advantage though, as SIU Edwarsville earned a penalty kick after a tough bounce forced a BU handball in the box. Twellman stepped up to the penalty spot and put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 79th minute.
Belmont junior Lou Manning (Southlake, Texas), who as of Tuesday was leading the Atlantic Sun Conference with 35 saves on the season, recorded five more on Thursday. Those five stops put the Bruin goalkeeper over the 100 career save mark in his three years with BU.
"We know that's a team we can beat," Head Coach Earle Davidson said. "That's a tough place to play, and they were very good with their set pieces. We know we're still playing well, and this difficult schedule we've had should help us come conference action."
The Bruins will next return home to host Evansville on Sunday, September 25th. Belmont and the Purple Aces will kick off at 1:00 p.m. CT at E.S. Rose Park.
