OXFORD, MS. - - Belmont (0-7) fell in a pair of five inning games in Oxford, MS. After rain washed out the Southern Miss tournament, the Bruins traveled to Oxford for a Sunday doubleheader against Murray State and Ole Miss. Belmont lost to Murray State, 0-10 in five innings this morning before falling to Ole Miss, 1-9, in five innings Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins had been scheduled to play Murray State and Ole Miss in Hattiesburg this afternoon before end of the week rains washed the tournament out. Belmont was able to make up two of the four games originally scheduled for this weekend. The Bruin offense continued to struggle to generate runs, managing only one for the day, despite recording seven hits. Belmont surrendered 19 runs on the day on 19 hits. Freshman Kirbie Ferrell continued her strong play for the Bruins, posting two hits and one RBI in five at bats.
Belmont managed only two hits against Murray State with singles from senior Hannah Irwin and freshman Amanda Criscione. The Bruins fared better against Ole Miss, posting five hits, but the team still struggled to turn those hits into runs. Belmont also struggled defensively, committing two errors and allowing 19 hits.
The Bruins return to action next weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn., in the UTC Frost Classic. Belmont will face Purdue, Tennessee Tech, Ball State, Dayton and Valparaiso.
