Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-1-1 OVC) rallied in the second half to cut into an early Morehead State (1-8-1, 1-1 OVC) at Rose Park but it was not enough to come away with the win on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles held on for the 2-1 victory to earn their first of the season.
The entire first stanza was a back and forth defensive battle between the teams with both squads missing scoring oppportunities to find the back of the net and take the lead. Finally in the 18th minute of play, the Eagles attacked the Bruin goal. In the traffic inside the box, Morehead State was able to use a blocked ball as a rebound to find the back of the net to take the lead. For the remainder of the half, MSU worked to keep the Bruins from tallying its first goal but had its hands full as BU remained aggressive until the break for halftime.
Belmont opened the second stanza aggressively but was called for an offsides barely 15 seconds in. The Eagles regained control and in less than 90 seconds had netted their second goal of the contest. Ten minutes later, the Bruins were able to find the back of net. Sophomore Alison Alcott (Dallas, Texas) fed the ball to classmate Rachel Schmidt (Dallas, Texas) for BU's lone goal of the afternoon. BU worked to find the equalizer goal but was unable to before time expired, giving MSU the 2-1 win.
Senior Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.), Schmidt and freshman Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) led BU with two shots apiece.
Junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) did not record any saves thanks to strong work of the Bruin defensive line.
The Bruins held the advantage in shots, 13-5, while the Eagles held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5, opening up a four-game road stretch starting at Murray State. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
