Box Score MARTIN, Tenn. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (4-8-2, 2-4-1 OVC) was unable to topple in-state rival UT Martin (8-7-1, 6-1 OVC) in a duel on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins were held off, 2-0, by the league-leading Skyhawks and fall to 2-4-1 in OVC play.
The Bruins hustled on both sides of the ball to keep the game locked in a 0-0 stalemate through the first stanza.
The game remained in the 0-0 tie until the midpoint of the second half. UTM was able to notch its first goal of the match in the 65th minute on a second chance shot and was able to net the insurance goal eight minutes later.
"The team battled today," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "I felt that we had our opportunities. We had about three great opportunities that forced their goalkeeper to make some really good saves. I think that that both teams battled and neither wanted to back down. But quite honestly, it was the luck of the bounce.
"There were some great battles on both ends in both 18 and unfortunately, it didn't fall our way. I was very proud of the efforts of our ladies, how they played the game and how they played the whole way through," Henson said. "We were able to bounce back in our play and continue to build on the second half."
The Skyhawks held the advantage in shots, 24-14, and corner kicks, 8-5.
Senior Katie Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) led BU with four shots each.
Senior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) spent the entire time in goal and collected nine saves, matching her season-high.
