Slow Start Plagues Men's Soccer Against Memphis

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's soccer dropped a decision to Memphis Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational.

Belmont would again test itself against a formidable foe, with the Tigers having knocked off then No. 15 St. Louis earlier this season.

The Bruins' stretch of unfortunate starts continued, as in the sixth minute Benjamin Ciosanski found Hector Cantele to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

From there, Belmont showed tremendous resolve, stringing together one of its finest blocks of offensive pressure of the young season.

The Bruins peppered Memphis with seven shots and four corner kicks over a 20 minute span, led by the play of freshmen Rashad Hyacenth (D'Abadie, Trinidad & Tobago) and Adriano Balani (Durres, Albania). But Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui kept Belmont off the scoreboard.

Then in the 27th minute, Cantele struck again to give the Tigers a two goal margin.

Fakhry Khulfan scored on a rebound three minutes into the second half.

"We have played an extremely difficult schedule to this point and it has shown areas that we need to improve on as we open Horizon League play on Friday," Belmont head coach Bryan Green said afterwards. "But it has also shown areas where we are strong, and that we need to play with confidence in those areas."

Hyacenth and Balani were named to the All-Tournament team.

Belmont (1-7) opens Horizon League play Friday, Sept. 26 versus Valparaiso. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT from E.S Rose Park.
