Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - - Belmont University men's soccer dropped a 5-0 decision at Evansville Friday night.
After a promising early scoring chance from freshman Adriano Balani (Durres, Albania), Evansville got on the board in the seventh minute on a tally from Charlie Macias.
The Bruins settled in - and got another quality scoring chance from senior Luca Schioppa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) - before Macias made it 2-0 off a Bruin mishandle.
Six minutes later, Faik Hajderovic pocketed a well-placed shot in the upper corner to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Senior Joao Fonseca (Aracaju, Brazil) and junior Cody Carpenter (Clinton, Miss.) would provide sparks in the second half, but Belmont simply could not work into the match.
The evening was an unfortunate homecoming script for senior captain Tyler Vieth (Evansville, Ind.), who played in front of scores of well-wishers.
"We have to learn to be a team that plays and competes for 90 minutes," Belmont head coach Bryan Green told belmontbruins.com afterwards. "We have some good moments but unfortunately right now we can't string enough of them together to get a goal. At the same time, we allow other teams to score goals off our mistakes. Tonight doesn't feel good, but it is a bump in the road and we have another opportunity on Sunday to get it right and improve as a team."
Belmont (0-3) returns to action Sunday, Sept. 7 at Omaha. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
