Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (4-12-2, 3-6-1 OVC) saw its postseason hopes dashed on Thursday night at home. The Bruins were edged, 1-0, by visiting Jacksonville State (8-9-1, 5-4-1 OVC) in a do-or-die matchup for a spot in the 2015 OVC Tournament.
The Gamecocks found the back of the net in the 14th minute and held on for dear life for the remainder of regulation to the slim lead. The Bruins assaulted the JSU goal early and often but despite a whopping 11 shots on goal could not find the equalizer.
Junior Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) led BU in shots with a match-high tally of six. Senior Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) added four shots and freshman Allie Svoboda (Lisle, Ill.) contributed three in the effort.
Senior Lindsey Espe (LaCanada, Calif.) and junior Stephanie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) split time between the posts, combining for three saves.
Belmont dominated in shots, 21-5, in the hunt for the equalizer, with 12 tallied in the second half. BU also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
"The ladies played hard tonight. Caroline Robinson had a great game in goal for Jacksonville State," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "We really stepped up in the second half and continued to fight. I couldn't be more proud of the team tonight and really their entire effort all season. They really battled and grew each game.
"I really want to thank our alumni who came out tonight, those who watched online and all of them who supported us throughout the season."
Prior to kickoff, the Bruins honored their six seniors, -- Cassie Blase, Rachel Dill, Lindsey Espe, Sydney Omweg, Emily Proud and Sydney Scheben.
