CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University volleyball fell, 3-0, to OVC-leading Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon in Clarksville to wrap up the season series between the two teams.
The Bruins (8-14, 6-6 OVC) lost 12-25, 14-25, 14-25 for their second loss to the Governors in as many days. Austin Peay (17-7, 10-1 OVC) won 3-0 on Friday night at the Winfield Dunn Center as well.
Belmont was unable to slow down the high-powered Austin Peay attack, as the Governors hit .440 in the match with just seven attack errors. Austin Peay also dominated at the service line, recording 12 aces to just two service errors.
The Bruins were led offensively by Mary Catherine Ball, who finished with eight kills on a .538 attack percentage. Lauren Walsh tallied five kills, and Taylor Floyd picked up four kills. Belmont tallied just 2.0 total team blocks on the afternoon.
In the first set, Belmont jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Austin Peay ripped off a 12-2 run to lead 12-5. The Governors hit .462 in the opening frame to set the tone for how the match was going to go, winning 25-12.
In the second set, the Bruins hit a match-best .132 with just three attack errors, but a handful of miscues in serve-receive allowed momentum to rest squarely on the Governors' side, and Austin Peay rolled to a 25-14 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final set, Austin Peay scored the first 11 points. The Bruins split the next 28-point stretch 14-14, but the Governors' cushion proved to be too big, as they held off Belmont for a 25-14 match-clinching win.
Belmont will return home to the Curb Event Center next weekend for a pair of matches against Murray State on Friday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Oct. 30. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
