Box Score Nashville, Tenn.-- A beautiful day at Rose Park, Belmont University Women's Soccer falls 3-0 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the final regular season matchup of the season. The Bruins head into the OVC tournament seeded third, the highest in program history with a 5-3 conference record.
The Bruins honored their seniors Keely Cartrett, Kayla Monis, Sydney Cason, Haley Poynter, Rachel Vernon, Erin Patterson, and Andrea Leitner today in a pregame celebration. It was a great chance to highlight all of the accomplishments the student athletes have had in their time at Belmont.
Emotional Head Coach Heather Henson notes, "Senior day is great to honor them for everything they have done on and off the field. The game itself is just an opportunity to play for them. It is great to honor them because they embody what 'Be Belmont' means. They brought that each and every day, they built and continue to strengthen our culture. They wanted to leave the legacy to be intentional with all they do, and they have done that. we wouldn't be the team or the family that we are without each of them. I want to thank the fans and the parents for coming out celebrating the seniors."
Belmont was unsuccessful in finding the back of the net today. The Bruins played defensively sound as always. Belmont made numerous opportunities towards the goal, testing the SIUE's offense.
The Cougar's controlled possession in the first half with the first goal of the match was scored by SIUE's Taylor Dolt in the 29th minute of the match.
The Bruins came ready to play the second half with excellent passing structure forward, eager to get a goal. Although the Bruins were not able to reach the back net their energy did not decline. SUIE went up 3-0 in the second half with both goals scored by Maria Haro.Their speed and grit to win was apparent for all 90 minutes and recorded one shot, five saves, and three corner kicks.
"We continue to talk about how strong our team is. The ladies showed their versatility today and each player was willing to step up when called upon. We played until the end, when you're down by a goal playing for a championship, we pushed numbers forward." Coach Henson noted on today's match.
Belmont University will host the first weekend of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. On Friday October 29, a neutral site competition will take place between #6 Morehead State and #7 Southeast Missouri at E.S. Rose Park at 6 p.m. The Bruins will take on the winner of that match October 31 at E.S. Rose Park at 1 p.m.
"As we told the team there are two ways to win a championship, you can win the regular season or you can win the tournament. We have tomorrow to rest up and then back to business on Tuesday. They know what tournament time means."
