Box Score Cape Girardeau, Mo. -- A beautiful soccer Sunday, Belmont University Women's Soccer took on Southeast Missouri in their first Ohio Valley Conference matchup of the season. After a scoreless regulation play the Bruins claimed victory over SEMO in a thrilling double overtime goal scored by Maci Pekmezian assisted by Summer Curtis.
The Bruins started the match off strong, keeping their composure attacking the ball. Early in the match Freshman Carly Ross had the first shot on goal in the ninth minute of the match. Possession throughout the game remained fairly even between the Bruins and Redhawks.
The Bruins tallied nine total shots in today's match. Two in the first half, five in the second, and 1 in each of the overtime periods. Belmont outshot SEMO nine to six during the 103 minutes of play. Anna Sweeney, Erin Patterson, and Summer Curtis all recorded 2 shots each for the Bruins. Belmont tallied four corner kicks, remaining first in the OVC for corner kicks.
"I am very proud of the ladies after a difficult week and having the perseverance to come together and go deep in the bench to get the first road conference win of the season." Head Coach Heather Henson on today's match.
The Bruin defense remained as strong as ever earning graduate transfer Andrea Leitner her second shutout of the season. Leitner recorded six saves for the Bruins and was not shot on during either of the overtimes. A true testament of perseverance that the Bruins have to continue to show their strength in these overtime appearances. Today's matchup was the Bruins fourth overtime apparence where they have gone 3-0-1.
"Andrea made the saves she needed to today, from the ones in her range to the big time saves."
After a throw in the Redhawks half the ball was settled by Pattrerson who passed it to Curtis who laid the ball off to Pekmezien at the top of the box. Pekmezien saw her chance and ripped a shot into the top right hitting the right post sending it into the net. This was Pekmezien's second goal of the season as well as her second game winning goal for the Bruins.
"Summer and Maci had a great week at training and it is so great to see that translate to the game today."
