Women’s Soccer Journey Continues after Falling 2-0 Belmont Fell 2-0 to Missouri State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University Women's Soccer fell 2-0 after a scoreless first half against the Missouri State Bears Sunday, October 9.

After today's meeting the Bruins are now 4-3-5 on the season and 2-2-2 in the Missouri Valley.

The Bruins honored mental health awareness in today's matchup. "For us it is not just wearing a green pregame shirt, we live it every day." Head Coach Heather Henson commended alumni Grace Parsons and her class for pioneering the need for a mental health match. Ever since Parsons joined the Bruins in 2017 Belmont Women's Soccer has sponsored a mental health game. "This week reminds us to be vulnerable and recognize that we are living life together as a family through all the storms. At Belmont we lean in on our faith to know that we can do it with each other but through God we are never alone." The officials wore green today to also honor the mental health match.

The Bruins came out ready to play moving the ball swiftly down the pitch through the Bears to begin the first half. Belmont showed many great moments on the pitch using their outside players to their advantage to create opportunities.

Sarah Doyle posted another impressive match with five saves, three of Doyle's five saves occurred in the first half to shutout the Bears in the first forty five. The Bruins earned themselves another team save on the season as Loren House guarded the post to ensure the ball would not pass through.

Missouri State posted two goals in the second half to claim victory over the Bruins. Grace O'Keef and Riley Sherron were able to get on target for the Bears in the 57th and 83rd minute.

Maci Pekmezian led the Bruins in shots with two while Leah Firsdon and Avery Nowak added two to their name.

"We created a lot of options today, now we will work on being more consistent in having those options available."

Head Coach Heather Henson noted the key takeaways from today's match, "We had a lot of great moments of closing out the Bears' seams in our pressure, cover, balance style of play. Offensively, this week we worked on moving off of the ball better to create better passing seams for ourselves, which we brought to the table today."

Up Next: The Bruins will host Valparaiso in a midweek matchup for their Think Pink match on Thursday, October 9.
