PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Belmont University volleyball team opened up play at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Washington, on Friday, falling 3-1 to receiving-votes Washington State in the first contest and dropping the second match, 3-1, to California Baptist.Â
By taking the second set off Washington State in the first match, it marked the first time since 2018 that Belmont had beaten a Power Five opponent to the 25-point mark in any set, when the Bruins faced No. 22 Michigan State.Â
Washington State 3, Belmont 1Â
After a lopsided opening set, Belmont rallied in a big way and took a set off receiving-votes Washington State before falling in four frames, 3-1.Â
Belmont dropped the match, 7-25, 25-21, 12-25, 20-25.Â
The 25-21 victory for the Bruins in the second frame marked the first win in a set for Belmont over a Power Five opponent since 2018, when Belmont won a set against No. 22 Michigan State, and just the second time since 2015, when the Bruins took a game off No. 18 Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.Â
Laura Shoopman led the way with 12 kills and 14 digs, securing her third straight double-double. Kristen Clemons finished with nine kills on 18 swings, Lauren Walsh added eight kills, and Ally Peterson chipped in seven kills.Â
Sydney Willis finished with three solo blocks, one shy of her career-high. Peyton O'Brien collected 18 assists while Lilly Lutz recorded 15.Â
Rachel McBride ended the match with nine digs, and made one of the top plays of the season when she crashed into the Bruin bench in the second set to preserve a point.Â
The Bruins played inspired volleyball in the second frame, hitting an incredible .405 while holding the Cougars to .182. Solo blocks from Clemons and Willis helped set the tone, Shoopman rattled on seven kills with only one error, and Peterson, Clemons, and Walsh all added three kills each in the second set.Â
The tight frame saw ties of 10-10, 14-14, and 20-20 before the Bruins rattled off five of the last six points thanks to kills from Clemons and Shoopman and a pair of Washington State attack errors that allowed Belmont to win the set, 25-21.Â
After falling in the third set, 25-12, Belmont responded again in a big way to start the fourth frame, cutting things to 13-15 on a Clemons kill and hanging around at 17-20 on a Peterson kill. Despite one last push from Belmont as they tried to force a fifth set, Washington State closed the door to win the match, 3-1.Â
Belmont was hurt at the service line, committing ten errors with one ace, while Washington State racked up 12 aces with ten errors.Â
California Baptist 3, Belmont 1Â

Freshman Lilly Lutz secured her first career double-double, picking up a team-high 30 assists to go along with 11 digs.Â
Rachel McBride led the team with 12 digs, the fifth time in six matches the junior has recorded double-digit digs.Â
Playing in her second match, freshman Savanah Brandt picked up her first career kill and first career block.Â
Belmont started strong, leading 12-9 in the first set and later opening a 17-11 advantage. Shoopman was a big part of the Bruin attack, collecting nine kills on 18 swings, while Lauren Walsh was an effective complement, picking up four kills on nine swings with no errors.Â
Effective setting from Lutz allowed Belmont to outhit Cal Baptist, .234 to .167, on the way to a 25-22 victory in the opening frame.Â
From there, the Lancers turned up the heat offensively, hitting an astounding .538 with only one attack error in the second set, .265 in the third, and .483 in the match-sealing fourth set win.Â
Belmont made a push in the second frame to cut things to 19-22, but Cal Baptist ended on a 3-1 run to even things up at a set apiece.Â
In the third, Belmont trailed just 16-19, but another strong closeout performance from the Lancers enabled Cal Baptist to take a 2-1 lead in sets with another 25-20 win.Â
The Bruins were unable to keep up with Cal Baptist in the fourth set, falling 25-16.Â
Last Word
"Today I think we showed moments of being a really good team. We battled against a big physical team that's receiving votes in the AVCA poll and were able to take a set off them by playing focused and disciplined volleyball. Laura and Kristen are developing into consistent, go-to players for us." --head coach Katelyn Harrison
