MURRAY, Ky. – Belmont University Women's Soccer defeated Murray State University 3-1 to clinch the Bruins first Missouri Valley Conference win.

Shae Doherty recorded the first shot of the match in the 16
th second, the earliest shot of the season from the Bruins.
Murray State went up early in the first half, for their sole goal of the match. Off a set piece, in the sixth minute the Racers' Mary Hardy got her head on the ball to get past the Bruins' defense.
The Bruins quickly countered in the eighth minute with
Addy Pitts' first career goal. Off of a block, Pitts caught the Racer's goalkeeper Jenna Villacres off her line to tie the match.
Belmont did not stop there,
Maci Pekmezian opened the second half with a goal of her own to go up over the Racers.
Olivia Walker sent in a cross to
Leah Firsdon who got a foot on it laying the ball in front of the goal keeper. Pekmezian slid in to earn her second goal of the season.
The Bruins added insurance to their lead in the 62
nd minute. A hard press from Sweeney blocked the Racer's clear to chip the ball over Villacres'.
"We challenged them this week to provide better advancing runs. I am very pleased with how we built our attacks today to create goals."
The Bruins tallied 10 saves against the Racers. Reigning MVC goal keeper of the week,
Sarah Doyle recorded her season high of nine saves.
Kennedy Wise earned herself a team save with a fantastic header on the line off of a Murray State shot.
"We possess this defensive mentality that will keep anything from going into the net."
Carly Ross also had a stellar performance on the pitch today controlling the center of the field both offensively and defensively.
"It was a good well fought battle. We are going to rest our minds and bodies and get back at it on Sunday."
Up Next: The Bruins return home on Sunday after a five-match road stretch to take on Southern Illinois at 1 p.m. CT.
