PEORIA, Ill. – Winning its third consecutive match, the Belmont University men's soccer team claimed its first Missouri Valley Conference road victory of the year Friday night with a 3-1 result at Bradley University. Graduate midfielder
Jansen Wilson notched his first career brace and the Bruins (6-3-2, 2-2-0 MVC) earned their first win at Shea Stadium in Peoria, Illinois.
Â
It was a total team effort with a season-best five assists by five different players and an opening goal from junior defender
Alex Clayton.
Â
Despite the host Braves (4-3-4, 0-3-0 MVC) occupying Belmont's defensive third for the first seven minutes, the Bruins broke through in the 11th minute on a deep free kick. With both of Belmont's first two goals coming on plays to the far post, Wilson put the Bruins up 2-0 in the 23rd minute before Bradley responded in the 25th.
Â
Wilson sealed the triumph in the 54th minute on another set piece, this time from just outside the penalty box on the right flank.
Â
Allowing just five shots on target, Belmont thwarted eight Brave corner kicks. In fact, Bradley wasn't able to put a shot on goal on any of its eight corners.
Â
The Bruins tallied 13 total shots, including seven of which were on target, with four of their eight first-half attempts on frame.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Grant Calvert came up with four saves and made a trio in the first 45 minutes of play.
Â
Following a foul by the Braves just into Belmont's attacking half, Wilson found junior midfielder
Rubyn Singh Gill in the center who fed the ball high to sophomore defender
Dylan Steely. Heading the ball in rhythm, Steely found a converging Clayton near the back post. Clayton timed his leap perfectly and headed in his second goal of the season.
In the 23rd minute it was graduate forward
Case Cox who played a ball from the center to a sprinting
AJ Chastonay on the right side. The senior midfielder collected inside the penalty area and sent a ball to the far post with his left foot, connecting with Wilson in mid-air in front of the goal line. Wilson then tapped in his third goal of the season.
Bradley forward Ian Ferguson found the back of the net on a rebound in the 25th minute. After a pair of saves by Calvert, the ball trickled free inside the six-yard box as a sliding Ferguson launched the Braves' lone goal of the night into the top right corner.
Â
Nine minutes into the second half, senior midfielder
Michael Saunders teed up a free kick just to the right of the penalty box and sent the ball to Wilson at the top of the penalty area. Bending it to the left, Wilson's strike stayed low and found its way to the bottom left corner near the far post.
Cox nearly gave the Bruins a fourth goal at the 86th minute, but his header toward the left side of the goal was saved by Bradley keeper Drew Berry.

Of Note
- After scoring first in Belmont's first six matches of the season, the Bruins hadn't registered the opening goal since their Sept. 12 win at Southern Indiana.
- The three-match win streak is Belmont's first since winning four in a row Sept. 10-24 last year.
- The Bruins have now scored three or more goals on three occasions this season – a 3-1 victory at Presbyterian College (Sept. 26) and a 4-0 win at Southern Indiana (Sept. 12).
- Wilson's brace is the first by a Belmont player since Cox recorded a hat trick on Oct. 1 of 2022 in a 3-3 home draw with the University of Illinois Chicago.
- Wilson is now tied with sophomore forward
Brock Kiper for the team lead in goals this fall (4). He leads the Bruins in assists (5) and points (13).
