NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University women's soccer (2-7-6, 1-2-4 MVC) hosted Northern Iowa (11-2-1, 4-2 MVC) Sunday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins came into the match fresh off their 1-0 road victory against Southern Illinois, while UNI fell to Murray State, 4-1.
In a match with two vastly different halves, an early goal from UNI was the difference-maker in the match. The Panthers pulled out their first victory in Nashville, 1-0.
UNI didn't take long to get on the scoreboard. Olivia Knoepfle scored in the 10
th minute of the match off an assist from Lauren Heinsch. It was the Panthers' first shot of the match and resulted in the game-winning goal.
Belmont outshot the Panthers 6-5 in the first half. Belmont created several scoring chances, including those from
Maci Pekmezian and
Avery Nowak, with three shots each.
Leah Firsdon recorded a shot in the match as well. The Bruins recorded the lone shot of the second half in the 86
th minute of the match.
"We took it to this team [UNI], outworked them, and outplayed them," said head coach
Kelsey Cameron. "I'm excited for this team and our upcoming Chicago trip. We have the confidence that we can play with any team in the conference."
UNI defeated Belmont, 1-0.
