Kendal Cheesman Selected TSWA Player of the Week

Junior Forward Scored Career-High 28 Points on 9-for-15 Three-Point Shooting in Win Over Georgia

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After leading the Belmont University women's basketball team to a 26-point win over the University of Georgia last Friday night with a career-best 28 points on 9-for-15 three-point shooting, junior forward Kendal Cheesman has been chosen as Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week. Announced by the state writers association late Tuesday afternoon, Cheesman picks up her first career player of the week plaudit.

Making her first career start versus the Lady Bulldogs, Cheesman knocked down four of her first seven three-pointers and scored 13 points in the opening quarter alone. She went 6-for-10 from distance in the first half with 19 points at the break and nearly finished with a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds.

Cheesman's nine three-point baskets are the most by a NCAA Division I women's basketball player in a game thus far this season and are just one shy of both the single-game program and Curb Event Center record.

In the Bruins' season opener last Monday at the University of Missouri, the Tampa, Florida (H.B. Plant HS), native connected on a three and scored five points to go along with five boards, two blocks and a steal. For the two games, Cheesman averaged a team-high 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds on 55.6 percent (10-of-18) shooting from beyond the arc.

Following Belmont's dominant 76-50 win over Georgia, the Bruins return to game action Wednesday night when they welcome Wichita State to the Curb. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Belmont closes out its three-game homestand with the Southeastern Conference's Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are receiving 51 votes in this week's Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll and 50 votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll.
