SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (14-20, 7-11 MVC) faced Southern Illinois (20-10, 11-7 MVC) in the MVC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Bruins fell in three to the Salukis.
How it Happened
Southern Illinois jumped to a quick 3-9 lead in the first. Belmont put together a 3-0 run sparked by a block from
Emily Warmenhoven and
Sydney Willis to bring the Bruins within three at 8-11. SIU regained control and continued to lead. Belmont put together a late run with an ace from Warmenhoven and block by
Kristen Clemons and
Kamryn Olson to work their way back in at 20-23. Despite the late run, the Bruins fell in set one 20-25.
Belmont and SIU went back-and-forth to start the second. A kill from
Brooke Gilleland brought the Bruins within one at 9-10. The Salukis later went on a 4-0 run to take a 11-17 lead. Gilleland added two kills down the stretch, but SIU went on to take the second 17-25.
The Bruins came out strong in set three.
Ally Peterson and Warmenhoven added a pair of kills to give Belmont the lead at 10-7. The rest of the set was a battle.
Rachel McBride served up an ace to push the Bruins' lead to 19-17. Gilleland rattled off another kill to bring Belmont to set point. SIU countered and pushed the set into extra points. The Salukis went on to claim the set and match 25-27.
